Southern Alliance for Animal Welfare is dedicated to saving the lives of cats and dogs in our area. By reducing the overpopulation, we will reduce the number of unwanted animals that are turned over to local shelters and end the euthanasia of healthy adoptable pets.
We offer education on pet care, spay/neuter programs, and food assistance to qualifying pet owners; Assistance that will allow these individuals to keep their companions.
One of our premier programs is “Spay Momma”, which started as a Spay Day project offering discounted spay and rabies vaccine for all mommas of litters turned in, where the owner was keeping the momma. Our low cost spay/neuter assistance offers surgery and a rabies v. This program allows pet owners the services that they could not afford at local veterinarians. These co-pays are about 1/3 the actual cost; with most given lower fees for multiples and feral (free roaming cats). Volunteers do all of the transporting to and from nearby spay/neuter clinics in our Critter Fixer Wagon.
We have concentrated heavily on resolving the feral cat population in the city. There are many “managed colonies” cared for by kind businesses, residents, and volunteers. With “Operation Catnip”, a Trap/Neuter/Return project, we have greatly reduced the number of feral (free roaming cats). Most have been returned to their “home” spayed/neutered and vaccinated and the babies fostered and socialized through our volunteer foster program. These babies have been sent to rescues such as Challenger’s House in Toney Alabama or into our adoption programs with PetSmart.
Our future plans are to open a low cost spay/neuter clinic in Lincoln County, to efficiently address more of the overpopulation of both cats and larger dogs; which are more difficult to transport.
SAAW/Lincoln Co. depends completely on fundraisers, grants, and donations from compassionate individuals and businesses. These people realize both the lives and tax money saved by reducing the number of unwanted animals.
